The use of “will” in English

Hello ABA friends!

The modal verb “will” is very important to learn in English as it will help you use the simple future tense in the correct way.

Two common future forms are “will” and “going to” and although they both used to refer to the future, the context in which they are used is quite different, so try not to get them confused 😉

Let’s take a look at some of the rules and uses of “will”, shall we?

Will is used to speak about the future and is used with the infinitive form of the verb when speaking in the present. The negative form of “will” is “will not/won’t”:

Sara will leave later.

Sara will not/won’t leave later. (negative)

Will is also used to make decisions, often spontaneous and at the time of speaking:

Would you like to come to the party tonight?

Yes, I will come, I have just changed my mind (decided at the moment)

Hello, may I speak to John?

Yes, I will call him for you (decided to call John the moment the request was made)

It is also used to make promises and requests:

I promise I will do my homework.

I promise you I won’t stay out too late.

Will you help me study this evening?

Yes, I will!

It is used for offers and predictions:

I will help you paint your house this weekend, I haven’t got any plans.

I will cook the dinner tonight, you look tired!

For predictions we often use: I suppose, I guess, I think, I imagine, I hope..

I suppose Mike will arrive at 10 pm this evening.

I think it will rain tomorrow!

There you have it everybody! It’s super simple and I’m sure you will be speaking perfect English in no time at all!
