It’s time for a joke!

Hi all of you!

Every month we like to share a joke with you. Jokes are a great way to learn other culture’s sense of humour. In English, a lot of the sense of humour is based on the pun.

Pun – a humorous way of using a word or phrase so that more than one meaning is suggested.

For example, the following cartoon uses two different meanings of the phrasal verb “to pick up” to make a joke:

pick-up

“To pick up” has many different meanings, but two of those meanings are:

1. to make an area clean and organized by removing trash and putting things in the proper places.

2. to learn (something) usually in an informal way.

The first guy asks what training you need to work as a rubbish collector. The second guy answers that you “just pick it up”, but which definition does he mean? Both, of course!

Did you understand the joke?
