Lester and Carolyn Burnham seem to be the perfect married couple living in a perfect house in a perfect neighborhood. But the truth is Lester is starting to suffer from depression as the result of many factors. Then one day, he becomes infatuated with one of his daughter’s teenager friends. Meanwhile, his daughter Jane is getting closer to Ricky, the shy boy who’s living next-door together with an abusive father.
The movie is about some of the most common fears people face: to grow older, the uncertainity of what true love is, to be lonely, to not be sure where the fine gap between what is morally correct or not lies, what morality is.
