Today we are going to be looking at how to use regular verbs in the simple past. If you can’t remember what regular verbs are, please refer to unit 65 for more information.
Do you remember how to form the simple past with regular verbs?
It’s really easy! All you need to do is add -ed to the infinitive verb.
Let’s look at some examples of how to change present infinitive verbs into the past simple:
Work-worked
Kick-kicked
Jump-jumped
Smoke-smoked
Like-liked
Talk-talked
Repeat-repeated
As you can see all you need to do is add -ed to the infinitive verb.
In English, the regular past simple forms stay the same for each person, and so you simply add -ed to the verb.
I Liked
You liked
We liked
She liked
It liked
He liked
They liked
You liked
Now let’s see some sentences in context using the regular simple past:
I helped him do his homework yesterday.
She cooked lunch and I washed the dishes.
They cleaned up the mess you made.
He smoked two packs of cigarettes today.
They stopped driving and walked the rest of the way.
It rained all day, so we stayed indoors.
We painted the house while they worked on their project.
