Text

His work is instantly recognizable. But what’s not so widely known is the impact that Andy Warhol has had on the art world.

– Warhol was the most influential artist of the last 50 years.

And that’s what led to a new exhibition called “Regarding Warhol: Sixty Artists, Fifty Years” which juxtaposes Warhol’s art with the works of 60 other artists. Twenty-five years after his death, Marla Prather, curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, says Warhol’s influence is still prevalent.

– When you begin to pay attention, Warhol is everywhere. Whether it’s someone’s tattoo that you see on the subway, whether it’s a particular kind of advertising, a particular kind of portraiture that is very much a Warhol kind of style.

Prather says the museum tried to find the best artists at work today — they include Chuck Close, Jeff Koons and Gerhard Richter.

– It wasn’t simply anyone who made their own Brillo box or who appropriated a Warholian image or who works in his style, but really thinking about who are the very best artists who have a relationship with Warhol.

“Regarding Warhol: Sixty Artists, Fifty Years” is at the Met from September 18th until December 31st.
