It’s never too late to learn, and this group of silver surfers is living proof. They gathered at a New York library to break into the space now predominantly occupied by the young – Facebook. Instructor Joshua Soule helps them navigate through the social network but says that most are quite tech savvy already. All they need is the right push.
– They tend to be unsure of themselves, I find and they just need like some reinforcement and some tips to help them use this stuff better.
For many of the students, Facebook offers new opportunities to stay in touch with family and friends. Seventy-six-year-old Rosalind Licht already knows exactly who she wants to friend, and who not. According to Pew Research Center over half of senior US citizens are online – and is a growing demographic. So it’s not long before timelines will include grandmothers and grandfathers as members of the family.
Vocabulary
Silver surfers – A way of saying older people (with silver /white hair) surfing the internet.
Predominantly – more important, powerful, successful, or noticeable than other people or things.
Savvy – practical understanding or knowledge of something.
Reinforcement – the act of strengthening or encouraging something.
