Learn English with Stories: “The Little Pianist”

Story telling is one of the oldest activities shared by cultures all over the world. It’s a human tradition and something we all enjoy listening to and sharing.

So today we will listen to another story: the story of Azul, a little boy who is a great pianist but is afraid to perform in front of a crowd.

Vocabulary

Becoming – to begin to be or come to be something specified.
Example: “We’re becoming best friends: we meet every day after school”

Sincere – having or showing true feelings that are expessesd in an honest way.
Example: “She gave her brother sincere appologies for having broken his toy”

Perform – to do an action or activity that usually requires training or skill.
Example: “My friend Anna is a great dancer, the other day she performed in London”

Audience – a group of people who gather together to listen to something (such as a concert) or watch something (such as a movie or play).
Example: “Shakira always has a huge audience, everyone wants to hear her sing”

Quite – to a very noticeable degree or extent.
Example: “Paul is quite annoying, he’s always complaining”

Squirrel – a small animal with a long tail and soft fur that lives in trees.
Example: “At my parents house in the country there are lots of squirrels in the trees”

Missing – unable to be found.
Example: “My phone is missing! Do you know where it is?”

Held out – to reach outward with (something, such as your hand).
Example: “She held out her present and I took it”

Stared – to look at someone or something for a long time often with your eyes wide open.
Example: “That woman is so beautiful I can’t stop staring!”

Wondered – to think about something with curiosity.
Example: “I’m wondering why the sky is blue”

Performance – an activity (such as singing a song or acting in a play) that a person or group does to entertain an audience.
Example: “The performance was amazing: everyone loved her! ”

Stage – a raised platform in a theater, auditorium, etc., where the performers stand.
Example: “The stage was empty before the actors came on”

Surrounded – to be on every side of (someone or something).
Example: “We were surrounded on all sides by people”

Bench – a long and usually hard seat for two or more people.
Example: “Please sit on the bench until the teacher comes”

Flutter – to move or flap the wings quickly without flying.
Example: “A butterfly fluttered around the flowers, it was so pretty!”

Hum – to sing the notes of a song while keeping your lips closed.
Example: “I can’t stop humming the song from that advert”
