Intermediate Grammar – Possessive adjectives

Possessive adjectives

What are possessive adjectives? They are words used to express possession.

Let’s see which ones they are:

my

your

his her

its

our

your

their

They are adjectives and therefore they always precede a noun and they have no number and no gender.

For example:

“My car”

“My cars”

“Your house”

“Your houses”

“Our sons”

“Our daughters”

Possessive adjectives in questions

We can also use possessive adjectives in questions with “what”, “which”, “who”, “where” and “how”.

For example:

“What is her name?”

“Which is your apartment?”

“Who is their teacher?”

The words “own” and “owner”

We use the verb “to own” to talk about possession. We can also use the noun “owner”.

To own – used to say that something belongs or relates to a particular person or thing and to no other.

Owner – a person or group that owns something.

For example:

“John is the owner of a shoe shop”

“They own three Thai restaurants”

“I own the cutest blue car!”

The word “own” is also an adjective and it can only be used after a possessive word. Let’s see…

“I don’t need to take the bus, I have my own car”

“Why don’t you use your own towel?”

“My mother started her own business”
