Modal Verb Characteristics
1. Modal verbs are not infinitive, we do not say “to may”:
“I to may eat sushi tonight at my favourite restaurant”
2. Modal verbs do not have the third-person singular, we do not say “mays”:
“She mays want to stay at home”
3. Modal verbs are followed by a second verb in the infinitive form (except for the modal verb “ought”)
“We may go to Italy”
4. To make a question, we do not use the auxiliary “do”:
Do May I eat this pizza?
5. Modal verbs do not have non-finite forms, they do not exist in the present participle, past participle or infinitive forms:
“The teacher has mayed ignored the exam rules”
In this situation we have to find a different way of saying the sentence, for example:
“The teacher might have ignored the exam rules”
6. Modal verbs exist in the present tense and the past tense:
can – could
may – might
must – /
ought – /
shall – should
will – would
