Ho, ho, ho!

(that’s “hello” for Father Christmas).

We know not all of you celebrate Christmas, but we think this is still interesting: what people eat for this celebration all over the world. Below you will find the text and the vocabulary you might not understand.

USA 

Roast turkey, squash, roasted root vegetables and mashed potatoes.

Roast – cooked by roasting. To roast is to cook (food such as chicken, potatoes, or beef) with dry heat in an oven or over a fire.

Turkey – a large American bird that is related to the chicken and that is hunted or raised by people for its meat.

Root vegetables – a vegetable (such as a carrot or potato) that grows under the ground.

Mexico

Salt cod with salad made with beets, nuts, lettuce and a variety of fruits.

Cod – a large fish that lives in the northern Atlantic Ocean and is often eaten as food.

Beets – the rounded red root of the beet plant that is eaten as a vegetable.

Peru

Turkey garnished with fresh fruit.

Garnished – to put something on (food) as a decoration.

Brazil 

Turkey, fish or pork with rice, fruit salad or Brazil nuts.

Argentina

Steak stuffed with hard-boiled eggs, onions and spices.

Stuffed – to fill (something) so that there is no room for anything else.

UK

Roast turkey, cranberry sauce and roast potatoes.

Cranberry – a small, dark red berry or the plant that produces it.

France

Roasted goose stuffed with chestnuts.

Goose – any one of many different kinds of birds that swim, that are larger than ducks, and that have a long neck and webbed feet .

Spain

Seafood dishes.

Poland

Fish dishes and pike with hard-boiled eggs and boiled potatoes.

Pike – a large fish that lives in rivers and lakes and that has a long body and sharp teeth.

Germany

Roasted goose, potatoes, braised greens and sauerkraut.

Braised – to cook (food) slowly in fat and a small amount of liquid in a covered pot.

Italy

Roasted meat, antipasti, pasta and sparkling wine.

Ghana

Tfufu and okra soup.

Tfufu – a food made by boiling starchy food crops like cassava, yams or plantains and then pounding them into a dough-like consistency.

Okra – a tall plant whose pods are eaten as a vegetable and are used in soups and stews.

Russia

Four-bird roast.

China

Roast barbecued pork, chicken and soup.

Philippines

Coloured steamed rice served in a bamboo tube and flavoured with coconut and brown sugar.

Steamed – to cook, heat, or treat (something) with steam.

Australia

Barbecues with prawns, chicken, pork, lamb and beef.
