What’s new everybody?
When people study, irrespective of the subject, one of the most difficult things can be memorising the information that you have learnt. It could be that you understand the technicalities of the information, but for some reason it just doesn’t stay in your mind.
In today’s post, we are going to look at different ways which could help make memorising information- in our case, English vocabulary, a whole lot easier.
Do pictures help you more than words?
If you have more of a photographic memory and learn better from images than repetitive reading, a good idea is to take photos of nouns of which you are learning the vocabulary. In other words- if you are learning kitchen utensil vocabulary, take a photo of the items or get them from the internet and label them with the corresponding word and study that way.
By doing this your brain associates the noun with its corresponding name in English. This can be reviewed and studied as many times as you need.
Do you memorise by writing?
There are a lot of people who cannot read something once and memorise it. These people memorise the information by writing it down, maybe not just once, but several times until the information is cemented in their mind.
Working alongside this idea- it is a good idea to get a friend or family member to test you on the vocabulary after you have written it down enough times. This allows you to practise enough but also take on the challenge of a mock test situation.
Why are mock tests a good way of testing your memory?
When you get friends or family members to test you on what you have been studying and trying very hard to memorise, you see the cracks in your studies. That is to say that these tests allow you to see what your strengths and weaknesses are so that you can focus more on the weaknesses than the strengths.
What is the key?
There is no “correct” way to memorise vocabulary as people learn in their own different ways, however paying attention to the aforementioned points could certainly help you in your studies.
My methode it’s simply. I write and I remembed few words. Usualy I have the problems with expressions and a grammar .
That sounds like a good method Iwona
For me the best way to memorise words is to write down sentences in a notebook. It is to say, within a context as the verb tenses on irregular verbs. Singing songs is a very good way to memorise words.
Best regards,
Hey Isidro, thanks for your comment. You have some very good ways to practise. Keep up the good work
Enter your comment here…I know some grammes but my main problem is that I do forget it when I’m talking and I know most of it and I feel ashamed ,pls how do I get out from this .
Hey, thanks for your question. The key is to practise as much as you possibly can. The more practice you get the better you will become
Thanks for comments. I have my own secret.Try to remember not a separate word, but a combination of the new word with an old one.You can write it on a sheet of paper and stick it onto the wall, the door or other places in the room or flat you live.
OLGA
That’s a good way to do it
VOCABULARY! I feel like forgetting what I learned a few hours ago! So I tried hard as the best as I could. I continuously memorized a few words before my bed and tried to remember all of them in the morning as soon as I woke up
The more that you practise the more you will learn. Just remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day. Be patient with yourself and you will achieve it
great to read that can help me thanks
hi George
14 years ago i decided to move overseas and i had 2 years to prepare and learn some English!
I decided to memorize 5 words a day. I selected lists of words, wrote and cut in cards with translation on the other side.
Every time i had a chance in public transport for example i always had 5 cards in my pocket. Over 2 years i learned around 3600 new words! I remember to memorize, i was thinking about this word and associated its pronunciation with some object that sound similar in my language. So next time this object will pop up in my head and then the English word.
When i moved to NZ, after some time i realized that 50% of words i learned never used in everyday English!
Later i found 3000 the core English words and i though i would love to have this list back when i just started to memorize words.
I dont stop extending my vocabulary. I read books and selecting some advanced words! Im a web developer now and tend to program all routine which i have.
So i thought to make a little program to memorize new words!
It works beautifully! I just play with it and new words stuck to my brain!
Then i was thinking about 3000 words! I worked 3 weeks going through the list and filtered around 400 very obvious words from there like OK, Hi, Hello etc ….
I put the program online just last week! I got around 20 users already! Some of my friends use it every day!
I use it all the time!
The program is very simple. Works at any device. Also i made that you can learn in reverse, change accuracy limit (when the word go off the list if you get it right several times) and change the “word portion at your plate”
if it helps more people to learn i will be happy!
here it is
enjoy !
For memorise I need repeat many times the same word and explain in my own word whats mean… I’m using a board in my room for write new vocabulary. It’s funny… I use the internet for the pronunciation. I’m trying, in some days is very hard and frustate because I want improve quickly.
This article has new ideas for me..I will use pictures… that sound great… thank you
