Spelling vs. Pronunciation

Relating the spoken to the written word in English can be very difficult even for native speakers and of course more difficult for you English Learners…

Good spelling and an accurate pronunciation are very important for clear communication and there are many ways to improve in both areas:

1.- Of course you need to practice a lot and lose the fear of speaking out loud.
2.- Activities like reading, watching TV or films in English, listening to music, etc always help.
3.- But also there many rules and tips that you can learn that will help you improve your spelling and pronunciation.

For example, did you know that the “e” at end of a word is almost always silent? It is called the “silent e” but it does affect the pronunciation of the word:

Look at these words and their definitions:

Definition Definition
Can A cylindrical metal container Cane A stick used for walking
Pan A container used for cooking Pane A section of door or window
Cub The young of certain mammals Cube A solid with 6 square faces
Tub A bucket or container for something Tube A hollow cylinder/the metro system in London
Man The opposite of woman Mane Long thick hair on an animal’s head (ex. a lion or horse)
Tap Where water flows from in the sink Tape A recording

Now listen, sing along and improve your spelling and pronunciation with the “Silent e” song.

Good job! And remember, don’t worry! English seems very difficult, but as you gain experience and keep practicing, it will get easier for you.

Speaking with native speakers, watching movies and listening to songs will help you understand the spoken language better, too!
