Summer is around the corner and that means getting in beach ready shape. And if it’s a surfer’s core you’re looking for – Surfset at New York’s Chelsea Piers is the answer.
This workout is all about endurance training and incorporates the same moves surfers use when hitting the waves. Instructor Kelly Narcum makes it look easy.
– Someone who’s never surfed before can get a great workout out on it. And kind of like say they had the experience of maybe, you know, maybe they don’t like the ocean, they don’t like the waves. But, or they are a little fearful of it. Well, they can really get over their fear by taking this class.
Students like Yal Lubarr say it may look like fun – but this is one challenging workout.
– It’s not easy, it’s not. The second you get on the board you’re shaking and you have to really use your core and your abdominals. And you’re working your upper body with your legs. It’s just a lot of movement without shaking. It’s very difficult.
If you’re seeking a more futuristic experience in your exercise routine, then Iobella Spa in Santa Monica has the perfect workout. Originally created in Switzerland, the women’s only workout begins with pilates type moves that are done in a thermal capsule that is heated to 98 degrees. Instructors say the temperature helps increase blood circulation to the areas you’re working on, so you lose inches quickly. After the 30 minute routine, clients get a 15 minute boost of O3, which helps improve the appearance of the skin and get rid of toxins. A workout from the inside out.
And, if you love Cirque du Soleil and want to master some of those aerial moves, NYC’s Crunch has a class for you. Instructor Jen James created SILKS, which infuses dance and simple aerobatics.
– People are using muscles and finding parts of their bodies that they don’t necessarily use when they come in lift weights. So this is a way to access all of those muscles and a little bit of brain excitement to.
With these new workouts, who said getting in shape can’t be fun after all?
