The best lessons from ABA English in 2019

2019 was a year of great learning for ABA English students. In this article, we invite you to learn the most popular content from the Live English section of the English course app. These lessons are fun and varied, letting you learn English with videos, podcasts and texts that have been created to offer you a unique experience.

Enjoy them and get ready to continue learning English with a lot of enthusiasm in 2020.

1. The Present Perfect Tense

If you like the expression “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,” we’re sorry to tell you that the present perfect doesn’t work that way. In other words, what happens in the past doesn’t stay there. It either affects the present or remains in force in the present. It’s something like the movie I Know What You Did Last Summer. Those friends thought they were going to get away with murder and then… everything got complicated.

Well, it shouldn’t be so complicated for you. Through our app, you can listen to this lesson in the Chill Out Learning collection before falling asleep. You’ll quickly realise that forming the present perfect isn’t that difficult.

2. Learn Animals Vocabulary

In the movie Back To The Future, do you remember someone calling Marty McFly a “chicken”? What happened? It was the perfect trigger for definite conflict. It’s clear that the character in this iconic feature film wasn’t offended by the insinuation that he looked like this feathered animal, but rather by the risk of being considered a coward.

Along those same lines, in English, we can find many expressions with no literal meaning. They highlight a quality, defect, or characteristic linked to animals. Sign in to the app to learn more vocabulary about animals.

3. Learn Fruit Vocabulary in English

Have you heard the expression “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”? It means that a child will usually have a similar personality or skills to those of their parents.

This is an example of an idiom, or idiomatic expression, in English, which can’t be translated literally. They’re also known as sayings. You’ll have to try to understand them from the context of the phrase or from their similarity to some expressions in other languages.

In English, we can find many expressions that are derived from nature and some from fruit in particular. Learn more fruit vocabulary by taking the quiz that’s available in the app!

4. Learn the Parts of the Body

You’re travelling in the United States and you’ve eaten something didn’t agree with you. You go to the doctor and don’t know how to speak English. What do you do? Mime maybe? Pointing at the body part is definitely something that can help them understand you.

However, the more words you know (with the correct pronunciation), the more effective your communication will be. In the Nature & Science section of our app, you’ll find vocabulary related to the body parts with some quizzes to evaluate your learning.

Well, we hope you won’t get sick on your next trip, but if it happens, it’s best to be prepared.

5. Learn Weather Vocabulary in English

The weather was one of the main protagonists of 2019: forest fires, floods, extreme temperatures, thawing at the North Pole, and animals in danger of extinction thanks to these drastic changes.

In order to talk about this issue, which affects both our daily lives and our lifestyle, the first step is to learn the vocabulary about the weather.

Start with our class on weather vocabulary, available in the app, and take the quiz to measure your progress.

6. Health vocabulary for travel

You’ve prepared all the essentials for your next trip to an English-speaking country: clothes, shoes, sun cream, travel documents, your rubber ducky… what could be missing from your checklist?

One idea could be to include a good review of some basic phrases to be able to “survive” without setbacks. For example, how to inquire about the price of something, ask for directions to a specific place, or, as mentioned above, know what to tell a doctor if you get sick.

Download the app so that you can watch the video by Teacher Robin, who will explain the appropriate vocabulary you’ll need if you have an unexpected doctor’s visit.

Is your suitcase ready? Okay. Have a good trip!

7. Practice Emotions Vocabulary!

We don’t always wake up in a good mood. Sometimes we’re a rollercoaster of emotions, which can affect our goals and projects.

Learning English requires us to have good motivation and to be very positive in the learning process. Don’t let the experiences from your past play any tricks on you; this year you will learn English like a true expert.

Learn much more about emotions on our app. We’re waiting for you!

What a great recap of 2019! These practical and fun lessons are excellent bases for what’s coming in the new year. Take a look and get ready to travel, to better understand your favourite movies in English, and to be able to order a plate of food abroad.
