International Day of Families

Hey everybody!

We’ve got a special blog post for you! Today is the official “International Day of Families” and we are going to be delving into when and why this special day to celebrate our loved ones and other related issues was created.

Did you know that the 15th May has been the officially recognised International Day of Families since it was proclaimed in 1993 by the UN General Assembly? That means people have been celebrating this day for over twenty years!

What are the day’s objectives?

Like most celebrated days, there is generally always a purpose to encourage people to interact or participate in an initiative. Governments and societies around the globe have been using this day as a foundation to promote important issues which affect many families, such as social and economic challenges.

This celebration day has also acted as a catalyst in inspiring other family related issue events in order to raise awareness around the globe of the real problems that families face on a daily basis. There have been many different types of events which have raised this awareness

Events:

  • Television programmes
  • Conferences
  • Local community workshops (to raise awareness locally)

These are just some of the events and projects which have been taking place since 1993 to highlight the importance of these issues in society.

What are tomorrow’s plans?

When most initiatives start, in addition to doing good and educating in general, most have a final vision or plan which they are heading towards. This special day is no exception. By the year 2030, this day aims to have helped heal some major problems.

Future goals:

  • A complete end to world poverty
  • Ensure children are properly educated
  • Care for the elderly
  • Shared economic prosperity

Being 14 years away, that sounds like a lot of time, but in the grand scheme of life is a short period of time. For all of these goals to be accomplished, all governments would need to do their bit so that we can eradicate the most serious problems, like poverty.

Is there anything we can do to help achieve these goals faster?

Educating ourselves is one of the most powerful things we can do to begin with- knowledge is power. If we are as passionate about these issues as those who came up with this celebration, then holding fundraisers for those who need it most is something simple yet effective.

One of the most important things on this very day is to appreciate your own family. Enjoy your day with them and make it as special as you possibly can because sometimes, we don’t know how lucky we really are.
