Intermediate Grammar – Some and Any

Hello there lovely,

Welcome to another ABA English for Intermediates lesson. If you are not sure of your English level, take our test!

In case you haven’t seen them, here are the two previous Intermediate classes:

Grammar for Lower Intermediates – “To Have” in Affirmative

Lower Intermediate Grammar – “To Have” in Negative and Interrogative

As you know, you can find all of this information, plus speaking exercises, writing exercises, vocabulary exercises and more on the ABA English Course Unit 27 “The dessert”.

Let’s go!

Countable and uncountable nouns

Do you remember what a countable noun and an uncountable noun are? Countable nouns are those that can be used with the indefinite articles “a” and “an” and a plural form.

For example:

“A book – Some books”

“A woman – Some women”

“A chair – Some chairs”

“An orange – Some oranges”

“An orangutan – Some orangutans”

Uncountable nouns cannot be used with indefinite articles. They have no plural form. This means you cannot say “moneys” or “waters”.

The word “Some”

“Some” is used with both countable and uncountable nouns in affirmative sentences.

For example:

“I need some milk”

“I need some pears”

We also use some when we want to ask a question to offer or request something: “would you like some tea?”.

The word “Any”

We can also use “any” with both countable and uncountable nouns in questions and in negative sentences.

For example:

“Do you have any coffee?”  “No, we don’t have any coffee”

“Do you have any apples?” “No, we don’t have any apples”

how to use some and any

Excellent! You have learned all about the word “some” and the word “any”. There are more interesting examples in the videoclass of Unit 27.

In Unit 27 “The dessert”, you will meet Kate and George. They are talking about what they will have for dinner. By watching the ABA Film, you will practice your listening comprehension. Record your voice and compare phrases to improve your speaking and learn how to write correctly. You will also gain fluency by interpreting roles and then you will learn the grammar and new vocabulary.
