Gerunds after verbs and prepositions

Hey ABA friends!

Recently we have been focusing on the use of gerunds in English and when they should be used. In today’s post, we are going to focus on their use after a verb and a preposition together in English.

When are gerunds used after a verb and a preposition?

In English, there are many expressions which are comprised of a verb followed by a preposition which are then followed by a gerund. Unfortunately there is no specific rule for these examples.

These examples when they appear should be learnt and memorised so that each time that they are used in English, they are followed by a gerund.

Examples:

I’m thinking of going on holiday next week

They’re talking about setting up a company

I’m looking forward to hearing from you

What else should be learnt when studying these examples?

When you are studying this kind of structure, it is important that you don’t overload your brain with too much information. Concentrate on the main examples and then once you have those memorised, go from there.

More examples:

I agree with buying a new car

I believe in helping disadvantaged people

I worry about starting new jobs

What’s the key?

As mentioned previously, the key is to memorise the examples in which this structure appears. This is best done in your own time and at your own pace to ensure that you don’t overload your brain.

At ABA English, we offer you the chance to try our course for free to see just how much you can learn in a short period of time. Don’t delay and make sure you start learning more English today.

  1. Hi,
I bought in 2016 a course from ABA English and cancelled my subscription. I got surpresed as I got charged again this year. I did not authorize this charge and I also did not asked any other course. It is very dangerous a company like Aba English fool their client or use their credit card without authorization and warnning. I want to be refound and apologies.

    Oi,
Eu fiz o curso com ABA English por um ano em 2016 e cancelei a minha assinatura para que ela não fosse renovada. Para minha surpresa, continuei sendo cobranda no meu cartão. Eu não autorizo tal cobrança automática e nem memso solicitei o curso para esse ano. É algo pririgossísimo uma empresa como ABA English enganar o cliente ou usam seu cartão sem avisar. Fico no aguardo do meu reembolso e um pedido de desculpas.

    Att.
    Irma
