Intermediate Grammar – Facebook Questions Answered

A member of our ABA English community has asked questions about when the following words are used:

Go-going-gonna
Why-because
All-everyone-everybody
To-for

Go-Going-Gonna

Go – ‘To go’ is the infinitive form of the verb
“I want to go to the UK.”
“Please go to the shop to buy some milk.”
Going – Going is the present participle of ‘to go’
“I am going to play football outside.”
“She was going to school when she met her best friend.”
Gonna – Gonna is a slang term for “going to”
“We were gonna go to the concert but we had no money.”
“Calm down, I’m gonna come back soon, I’m just meeting some friends.”
Why-Because

Why – Why is used to ask questions
Why are you sad?”
Why are you going home?”
Because – Because is used to respond to questions beginning with ‘why’
“I’m sad because you hurt my feelings.”
“I’m going home because I’m tired.”
All-Everyone-Everybody

All – All means the whole, entire, total amount, quantity, or extent of something
“We should all go to the park, it’s such a beautiful day!”
Everyone and Everybody -These two words are synonyms, both mean every person
Everyone has a special talent; mine is drawing”
Everybody has a special talent; hers is playing the guitar”
To-For

To – To is used to indicate the place, person, or thing that someone or something moves toward
“I’m taking this book back to the library.”
For – For is used to indicate the thing that something is meant to be used with
“He thought he’d give his girlfriend a rose for their anniversary.”
Note: These are general rules. Prepositions such as ‘to’ and ‘for’ are very difficult to learn in any language. They can sometimes be used interchangeably and their usage often depends on “what sounds best” to a native speaker. For English learners, preposi tions are learned over time with diligent practice and listening.

I called my friend Samantha and she said: “I’m GONNA make a delicious chocolate cake”. Samantha is a very good cook so her cake will be amazing! Now all I have to do is GO to the supermarket to buy food and drinks FOR everyone.
I think EVERYONE/EVERYBODY is going to have a lot of fun, Thomas will bring his guitar and we can all sing “Happy Birthday” TO Julia.
