7 tips to concentrate on studying

You feel it’s a good day when you get yourself started with studying; so, you sit down and start reading your notes and try to get some exercises done. Unexpectedly your phone vibrates as your friend has sent you a message. You read it and reply since you see that they are online and you start chatting with them a little. When you try to get back to where you were before being interrupted, you find yourself reading the same sentence over and over again, without really understanding what its meaning is. Then, you hear some noise from the neighbours, or perhaps it’s your stomach growling for food. Glancing down, you notice that your holiday photos are on the table and you can’t help having a look at them once again, and while you do so, you have the brilliant idea to check out some flights for next weekend’s escape. So, you end up doing a bit of everything except the studying that you had originally planned to do.

Does this sounds familiar to you? If the answer is yes, perhaps you might find our tips helpful to help you make the best of the time you dedicate to your studies.

1. Get yourself comfortable

Wear fresh and comfortable clothes that are not tight that you feel comfy in. If the idea of remaining seated for long periods drives you crazy instead of helping you concentrate, then change your spot.

2. Keep it minimal!

Once you have chosen your spot, try to spend a few minutes to clear the space around you making it as organised and tidy as possible. By doing so, the chances of getting distracted will decrease considerably. In addition to that, doing a bit of physical exercise will give you an opportunity to increase your mental space (Have you ever heard of decluttering?)

3. Eat properly

We often believe we need to eat something when in reality, we aren’t actually hungry but just a little dehydrated instead. Have something to drink nearby: a bottle of water, a cup of tea or a smoothie. If you tend to munch on something, it’s a good idea to have some fruit or nuts handy.

4. No notifications

In order to avoid distractions, put your phone on silent with vibrate turned off. If you know you’ll be tempted to check your social networks, try to use one of those “locker” apps that allows you to temporarily block your phone notifications from social platforms.

5. Silence!

If you want to make the most of every minute spent studying, then silence is key. If you are however one of those people who can’t stand quietness, you might want to try noisli.com, that allows you to create a personalized background soundtrack.

6. Set achievable goals

If you realize that your final goal looks like climbing a mountain, try to break it down into smaller “pieces”, until it feels like an acceptable task. Before starting your studying session, select which units you want to complete in a specific time frame

7. Have a break!

Let’s debunk the myth:  taking breaks is not for the lazy! Not only does it enable you to stretch your legs and move around a bit, but it also makes each minute dedicated to studying more effective.

Great! You are now ready to dedicate some time to your studies, without procrastinating. Remember: time is money! Are you feeling inspired to start studying right away?
