Reading Comprehension: “Draw a Stick Man”

Today’s lesson is a lot of fun AND you’ll be learning English. Fantastic!

Hitcents.com, a creative agency from Kentucky, has designed a game played by hundreds of people online. Do you know what a stickman is? A stickman is a person drawn with short lines; a very simplified version of a huma beingn.

“Draw a stickman” gives you instructions on what to draw so that your stickman can have a fun adventure. It’s really cool and original.

Vocabulary Episode 1

Key – an object that is used to open locks. It opens things which are closed.

Balloon – a large plastic sac which is inflated with air and used as a child’s toy. If it is filled with hot air, it will rise in the air.

Weird – unusual or strange.

Sword – a weapon with a long metal blade that has a sharp point and edge.

Rain cloud – A cloud white or gray mass in the sky that is made of many very small drops of water. A rain cloud is a cloud which is darker and will certainly bring rain.

Above – on top of.

Drain – something (such as a pipe) that is used for removing a liquid from a place or container.

Vocabulary Episode 2

Ladder – a device used for climbing that has two long pieces of wood, metal, or rope with a series of steps or rungs between them.

Rescue –  to save (someone or something) from danger or harm.

Costume – the clothes that are worn by someone (such as an actor) who is trying to look like a different person or thing. In this case, you must make your stickman look like a tiger.

Bucket – an open container with a handle that is used especially to hold and carry water and other liquids.

Elevator – a machine used for carrying people and things to different levels in a building. In English, it’s called a lift.

That’s handy! – an expression that means something is very useful or helpful.

Weight – a heavy object.

Stuck – difficult or impossible to move from a position.

Beaver – a small animal that has thick, brown fur and a wide, flat tail, that cuts down trees with its teeth, and that builds dams and underwater houses with mud and branches.

Wings – a part of an animal’s body that is used for flying or gliding.

Climb on – to move onto something else.

Back button – the button in your browser you use to visit the page you where before.

Disaster – something that has a very bad effect or result.
