“But I can’t speak English…”

When we begin learning a new language it can be hard to keep our motivation; we are shy and nervous about speaking, we are scared of making mistakes. And then we stop trying, and just say “but I can’t speak English”.

Yes you can. You are beginning. You simply can’t speak English YET.

So remember this quote whenever you feel shy or embarrassed to speak in English.

We all start somewhere, right?

  1. I totally agree on this topic. I’ve been studying for long time, but I still have the fear of making mistakes in my job (not for hobby or vacation) and that is what stops my fluency. Reading or writing are much easier, but listening and speaking are tremendous, especially on the phone or face to face with native speakers of English… I’m trying my best every day and I often repeat to myself this “YET”; I can assure it’s a good system, just try it : IT WORKS!!

  2. yeah, thank you for this tip…I´ll try say “YET”!!!

    • Awesome Elizabeth!! 🙂

    • Yes Elizabeth, it’s not only a kind of “mantra”…. I have subscribed to a “talking club”, for students from different countries and every night I chat on skype with American students who want to learn Italian. With my great surprise they all say that my English (written and spoken) is good (incredible!) and they find much more difficulty than me in learning Italian with a lot of mistakes…but they don’t mind and go on with grammar books, one weekly meeting in U.S., chat on skype…. And they often study this way more than one language! For me it’s absolutely fantastic and they give me courage and strenght to carry on; when I tell myself “not yet” I always have in mind my American friends and I say “yes I can”. Thank you for your attention.Roberto
